If a misfire occurs i.e. after pulling the trigger the cartridge fails to fire you must:
Keep the firearm on aim for a period of not less than 30 seconds. In the case of a rifle do not remove butt from your shoulder. After 30 seconds keep the firearm pointing down range and within safety angles. If the firearm is fitted with a magazine this should be removed now.
Tilt the firearm away from you and open the action. In the case of a semiautomatic ensure the slide locks open. Do not look into the breach until the action is fully open and locked.
The ejected cartridge should be left alone on the bench for period (20+ seconds) before handling.
The ejected cartridge can then be inspected and handed to the RCO who will oversee safe disposal.
The RCO has a right to keep the defective cartridge!
